News from the Home Capital of Muay Thai #2 - Oct 15-30, 2020

Outstanding fight on Muay Thai Superchamp between teenage upcoming Swedish female fighter Smilla Sundell (@smilla_thestorm_fairtex) and seasoned fighter Sawsing Sor. Sorpit (@sawsing_sorsopit).

On October 28, 2020, Sundell fought Sawsing in a much anticipated fight on Muay Thai Superchamp in Bangkok. Watch the full fight here.

From the beginning, Smilla set the pace, forcing Sawsing to stay on the defensive. It was a battle between Smilla's vicious knees and heavy punches against Sawsing's sharp elbows and kicks.

By the last round, Sawsing–one of the top female fighters in the Muay Thai circuit–is seen visibly struggling. When the bell finally rings, she grimaces in pain.

One spectator commented that this was the first time she saw Sawsing truly struggle against an opponent.

Smilla… future world Muay Thai champion?

The fight between Smilla and Sawsing was also interesting for another reason: it was the co-main event, yet received double the number of views online compared to the main event. Many noted that this was “proof that the women's bout deserve to be the main event.”

Since the beginning of this year, many of the largest fight promotions such as the UFC and ONE Championship are now frequently holding women's bouts as their main events thus signaling in an exciting new era for female fighters. On behalf of Team Primo, we would like to congratulate Smilla on this hard earned victory and wish her many more exciting headliners to come!

Excellent fight between Lobo Phuket Fight Club and Panpayak Chuwattana: In In addition to Sundell, another foreign fighter to keep an eye on is 26-year-old Brazilian fighter Lobo from Phuket Fight Club. 

Lobo started fighting at a relatively “old” age, 19 years old. 

This contrasts with Thai fighters, who oftentimes begin their fighting careers at 8-9 years old. 

Thanks to his relentless work ethic, focus, and frequent fights, he caught up quickly.

On October 26, 2020, Lobo showcased his skills at Rangsit Stadium in Bangkok, beating former Rajadamnern Muay Thai champion Panpayak Chuwattana. You can watch excerpts of the fight here. Follow Lobo on Instagram at @lobo_phuketfightclub.

11-year-old twin fighters Yodpeto and Yodpeteg buy their parents a car. See Facebook post here. In Thailand, similar to boxing in the States, Muay Thai can be a way for young fighters to “make it." If persistent, disciplined and talented, it is not uncommon for young fighters in Thailand to start earning large sums of cash from their fights as early 10 or 11 years old.

YodIQ, meaning “awesome intelligence," was given his fighting nickname thanks to his high “Fight IQ” and technical “Muay Femur” fighting style.

Rajadamnern and some other fight promotions in Thailand have started making you pay to watch fights online: Due to new social-distancing laws in Thailand, many stadiums are only able to partially open their stadiums to the public, resulting in a loss of income from ticket sales. To address this problem, many stadiums–most notably, Rajadamnern–have begun switching over to a UFC-like pay-per-view business model (charging somewhere around $1-2 to watch online). A couple of months ago, viewers could watch these fights for free on Facebook and Youtube.
